LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - Two police dogs that work for the Lumberton Police Department have some extra protection on the job.

A Massachusetts charity has donated two protective vests for Spike and Nero to protect them from bullets and stabbing injuries.

Lumberton police said the vests come from a group in East Taunton, Mass., called Vested Interest in K-9s.

Spike’s handler, Sgt. Joe Cain, say he’s thankful for the vest. Cain says every officer is issued a vest when they are hired by the force and now his canine partner has one too.

Nero got his vest last month.
