LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas firefighters say they used a ladder truck as a crane to pull an injured worker out of an 18-foot-deep trench.

Authorities say the man had been in the trench on Vegas Drive when an accident happened Wednesday morning. Firefighters say the man appeared to have a back injury and they didn’t want to aggravate it, so they decided to lift him out carefully.

Officials say the worker was secured and lifted out to a waiting ambulance, then taken to the hospital. His injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.

The rescue took about 60 minutes.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the cause of the initial accident.
