CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston City Council has decided to eliminate a traffic lane to create a bike and pedestrian lane on the busy Ashley River Bridge on U.S. 17.
Council agreed to the move on an 8-5 vote Tuesday.
The work on the $1.6 million project could be done in 18 months and would create a bicycle lane connecting the Charleston peninsula with the city’s western suburbs.
Opponents said creating the lane will only mean more traffic congestion on bridges that carry 56,000 vehicles a day.
City figures indicate as many as 1,500 people will use the bike and pedestrian lane on weekdays, about two-thirds of them commuters heading downtown.
