CHICAGO (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn says a new digital manufacturing lab to open in Chicago will become a birthplace for innovations.

President Obama announced the new Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute on Tuesday.

Quinn says the institute will have the ability to change the world.

The institute will use $70 million in Defense Department funding and $250 million from other public and private sources to bring a number of universities and dozens of companies together as research partners.

The University of Illinois is one of those partners. University President Robert Easter says the school is looking forward to ways its faculty can contribute.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster is a Democrat from Aurora. He says the new institute is an opportunity for the whole state of Illinois.
