GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a suspected Gilbert bank robber who was fatally shot following a carjacking and a chase in neighboring Mesa.
Gilbert police say 57-year-old Harold Lynn Phelps was pronounced dead at the scene of Tuesday’s shooting.
They say the robber fled on a bicycle after the 9 a.m. heist and surfaced miles away in Mesa, where he carjacked a pickup truck outside a business.
The ensuing chase involved two rammings of police vehicles and ended at an apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
Police say the suspect emerged from the truck, which had only three tires remaining.
They say he displayed a lethal threat at two Gilbert officers before being shot.
Police say one Gilbert officer suffered non-life threatening injuries in one of the rammings.
