PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island has filed a lawsuit against state police and the Department of Corrections over fees for public records.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1fmhs5M ) that the state affiliate of the ACLU sued the two agencies Monday on behalf of a small community group, the Olneyville Neighborhood Association.
The lawsuit contests nearly $2,000 in fees the agencies requested to produce public records on federal immigration detentions. The neighborhood group is seeking records involving detainee transfers from law enforcement to the custody of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The ACLU is seeking a court order to waive the fees.
Officials with the state police and Corrections Department say the request is voluminous and the fees fall within the state Access to Public Records Act.
