LAS VEGAS (AP) - A federal judge has ordered a 30-year-old Nevada man to remain behind bars while he faces felony charges of aiming a laser pointer at a Las Vegas police helicopter six times in less than two weeks.
U.S Magistrate Judge Nancy Koppe says 30-year-old James Zipf of Henderson placed the lives of people in the helicopters in danger and she considered him a threat to the community.
She says she also was concerned about his lack of candor with federal investigators after his arrest Wednesday.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1h3u5HJ ) that after the judge refused a defense request to release him, both Zipf and his wife began sobbing.
Zipf, who moved to Henderson from Phoenix nine months ago, has a 2011 conviction for pointing a similar blue laser at police helicopters there.
