MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont fire safety officials are warning property owners to be sure to keep exit doors and fire escapes clear of ice and snow.

The Department of Fire Safety says the heavy snows seen this winter and the likelihood of further snowfall, requires greater vigilance to ensure emergency exits are clear.

Schools, apartments, restaurants, nightclubs and other buildings often have secondary exits that may become blocked by ice or snow.

The state says it’s up to building owners to maintain required exits and to clear ice and snow or other obstructions as quickly as possible.
