SELMA, Ala. (AP) - State education officials are now in charge of Selma’s troubled school system.
WSFA-TV (https://bit.ly/1c8EZXS ) reports the state assumed control of the city school system Friday.
A meeting between State School Superintendent Tommy Bice and local officials began an intervention process that could last two years.
The takeover follows the arrest of a Selma High School teacher on charges of having inappropriate sexual conduct with a student.
The charges prompted an investigation by the Alabama Department of Education. That review found the Selma system failed to adequately investigate allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.
The investigation also found that administrators tried to get teachers to change students’ failing grades, and that the system didn’t enforce graduation requirements.
The state superintendent says some employees are being put on paid leave.
