Emily Schmall, a former international freelancer for The Associated Press, will join the cooperative’s Fort Worth bureau as a correspondent focused on business and economic development.

The appointment was announced Friday by Central Region Editor David Scott and Texas News Editor James Beltran. She will join the Texas staff effective March 31.

“Emily has a wonderful ability to tell the story of a place to the world, and she will be a huge asset in Texas, a place where there’s always a great story to tell,” Scott said.

Schmall was a freelance reporter in Argentina for the AP and the New York Times from 2012-2013, covering the election of Pope Francis as well as drug and human trafficking issues. She joined Curbed Miami last year as its associate editor focusing on real estate and urban development.

Schmall also has covered marketing and investing for Forbes, and as a freelancer she reported on Mexico’s stock market and the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in 2010.

Schmall, 30, is a Chicago native. She earned her master’s in journalism from Columbia University in 2009.
