GRAND CHAIN, Ill. (AP) - Parishioners at one southern Illinois Catholic church that’s marked for closure have asked that the Diocese of Belleville preserve the church building.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1fhZAi9) that church members and residents have formed the St. Catherine of Alexandria Church Preservation Society. The church’s closing Mass is scheduled for Saturday. Members of the group would like the building preserved so it is available for future prayer services, funerals, weddings and occasional Masses.
The church is one of five rural southern Illinois parishes that the diocese has decided to close.
Monsignor John Myler is spokesman for the diocese. He says no decision has been made about the future of the church building.
