PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) - Police in southwestern Michigan say a man died last year in a reckless driving incident, not a fall down the stairs.

Dakota Kearns was brought to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo on Oct. 11. Medical staff was told the 23-year-old Gobles native had been injured in a tumble down a flight of stairs.

But medical examiner’s investigators determined Kearns’ injuries were not consistent with that story.

Van Buren County sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Harvey says Kearns was on top of a car when he fell and struck his head on the roadway. According to Harvey, Kearns and 24-year-old Seth Jones of Lawton were in Almena Township, trying to steal street signs.

Jones was arraigned this week on a reckless driving causing death charge. A message was left Friday was his lawyer.
