ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Better Bet, a long shot, led from the gate and barely held off a charge from Lucky Views to win the $58,000 Silver Lining Purse at Santa Anita on Friday.
Ridden by Edwin Maldonado and running for the first time on turf, the 13-1 Better Bet went straight to the front of the field of five 3-year-olds. Lucky Views gave chase in second throughout the mile.
Better Bet never yielded, winning by a nose in 1:35.27.
The winner paid $28.80, $8.20 and $6.40. Lucky Views paid $4.00 and $3.80. Awesome Return paid 3.60 to show.
The heavy favorite, Texas Ryano, was never a factor and finished fourth.
It was the third win in 13 career starts for Better Bet. He has earned $255,120 for trainer, owner and breeder Mike Harrington.
