GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - Officials say a 70-year-old Helena man was shot and killed during an armed standoff with officers in the Browning area.

Authorities identified the man Friday as James M. Ness.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry tells the Great Falls Tribune (https://gftrib.com/1ee6ten ) his office received a report shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday of a missing man who was armed and suicidal.

With help from an OnStar system on the man’s vehicle, police located it and began a pursuit, which covered several counties and involved about six law-enforcement agencies.

Deputies at one point backed off from the chase due to high speed and road conditions.

An FBI news release says when Ness was finally stopped near East Glacier, shots were exchanged and he was hit.

The FBI says the incident is under investigation.
