DUNBAR, W.Va. (AP) - Police say a Dunbar man fatally shot himself with his own gun during a struggle with officers.
Kanawha County sheriff’s Cpl. Brian Humphreys says the shooting occurred Wednesday after Dunbar officers went to 65-year-old Rick Dean Wilcox’s home to serve him with a domestic violence petition.
Humphreys said Thursday that Wilcox locked the door after meeting the officers, and then fled into the house. The officers used a key provided by family members to enter the house.
Humphreys says the officers struggled with Wilcox and he pulled out a handgun. During the struggle, Wilcox shot himself with the gun. He was taken to a Charleston hospital where he later died.
The Kanawha Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
