NORMANDY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro says Normandy schools in St. Louis County will remain open - at least through the end of the current school year.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1bpJNwK ) reports that Nicastro said in a letter on Thursday to parents and students that education officials will work with Normandy’s administration to make sure that the school year is completed with minimal disruption.

Normandy and the neighboring Riverview Gardens district are unaccredited. A transfer law upheld last summer by the Missouri Supreme Court allows students in unaccredited districts to transfer to better-performing schools at the district’s expense.

Normandy officials have said the process is so costly that the district could run out of money by April.
