CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire’s state fire marshal says it’s a good time to clear the roofs of recent heavy snow and ice.
William Degnan says a roof may collapse with little or no warning.
Signs of the danger include sagging roof steel, leaks, cracks, buckling of interior walls, doors or windows that are difficult to open, and sprinkler heads pushed down below ceiling tiles.
Degnan advises people to be careful not to damage gas and oil service to the building. He said using a roof rake is recommended while keeping away from electrical lines.
Exits should be kept clear of snow, as well as windows, in case of a fire.
“We ask people to use good judgment as to whether they can remove the snow and ice buildup themselves, or should hire someone to take care of it,” said Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Chief Butch Morrill. “The weight load on the roof will increase if we get any sleet or rain on top of the snow that’s already there.”
Authorities also are urging people to check the vents of their heating appliances to make sure they care clear of snow and ice buildup.
“As we have seen around the state recently, carbon monoxide poisoning is very real and can have severe consequences,” said Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Tom Zotti.
