WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her newborn earlier this week.
Suffolk County Police say Santos Elena Ruiz Solano gave birth to a baby girl early Sunday at a home in West Islip where she was employed as a live-in housekeeper.
Police say the baby suffered traumatic injuries shortly after her birth and died at the scene. Police say Ruiz Solano then placed the baby in a plastic bag and left the home.
Police say the mother went to the hospital due to childbirth complications and hospital personnel recovered the baby from a nearby garbage can and called police.
The 26-year-old was arrested on a murder charge and is being held pending arraignment on Friday. It wasn’t clear if she had a lawyer.
