LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is taking a step toward building a new education and recreation center near Jasper.

The panel on Thursday approved spending $10,000 to appraise real estate and for other costs associated with the 42-acre site.

Commissioners agreed to apply for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant from the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. The money would be used to help pay for buying the land, which was appraised for $277,000 in September 2007.

The parcel is along Arkansas Highway 7 north of Jasper.

The center would feature a paved trail, pavilion, fishing piers, wildlife observation blinds, canoe launch areas and other amenities.
