LAUREL, Miss. (AP) - Nearly three dozen people have been taken to hospitals after a floor of a church collapsed in Mississippi.
Hospital and emergency officials tell The Chronicle in Laurel (https://bit.ly/Nd2mcx ) that 35 people were injured when a second-floor youth room collapsed into the first floor kitchen during Wednesday night services at Freedom Baptist Church.
A 16-year-old girl who suffered a head injury was airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. But all of the other youth taken to South Central Regional Medical Center had been treated and released by early Thursday, SCRMC spokeswoman Linda Gavin said.
Pastor Tommy Davis says the floor gave way, causing about 70 students to fall. He says no one was seriously injured and “God’s hand was certainly taking care of the kids who were in that building.”
