MIDWAY, N.C. (AP) - Davidson County officials have identified a man who died in a fire at his home in Midway.
The sheriff’s department says the victim was 77-year-old Harold Nifong.
Investigators said it appeared Nifong died after his clothes caught fire while he was working on his gas fireplace.
Firefighters were called shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Midway Fire Chief Mike Craft said a relative tried to get into the house but the smoke was too heavy.
The body was being sent to Raleigh for an autopsy. There was no indication of foul play.
No one else was in the home when the fire started.
