SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Some Sioux Falls homeless shelters are making beds on the bleachers and floors, while others have empty mattresses.

The Argus Leader reports (https://argusne.ws/1buNADr ) the Salvation Army is serving more people than ever at the warming center it runs during the winter months at its gym.

Other homeless shelters in Sioux Falls have room for more.

The St. Francis House was completely full until the Salvation Army’s warming center opened in mid-December. Now, more than half of the 40 beds reserved for men are empty at night. The Union Gospel Mission is about two-thirds full.

The main difference between the warming center and these two shelters is their zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. Those staying at St. Francis or the Union Gospel Mission must be sober.
