WEST GARDINER, Maine (AP) - Maine police are investigating what they say was an accidental shooting of a fisherman by a hunter aiming at a squirrel.

Police say a young man hunting at the West Gardiner Rod and Gun Club aimed at a squirrel in a tree.

WGME-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1dWIJuN )the bullet missed the squirrel and hit the fisherman in the back of the head as he was standing over his fishing hole about 300 yards away.



Police say friends worked to staunch the bleeding before he was rushed to Maine General Hospital.

Maine troopers say they know the man’s condition. They are continuing to investigate.
