BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa man died and another was critically injured after their vehicle slid off the road and struck a tree.

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s office says the accident happened near Burlington shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. The storm that dropped five inches of snow on the area likely played a role.

Sheriff’s deputies found a single vehicle that had slid into a ditch and struck a tree.

The vehicle’s passenger, 51-year-old Michael Loyal Butler of Mediapolis, was killed in the crash.

The driver, 46-year-old Dan Allen Miller of Mediapolis, was critically hurt in the crash and taken to Iowa City for treatment.

Authorities say the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
