PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Senate has passed a measure requiring openness from the group that governs state-wide high school sports and fine arts activities.
The bill’s sponsor, and other senators, say the High School Activities Association does good work for the state. Supporters of the bill say the association should be subject to government transparency laws because it operates with authority from school boards.
Senators passed the measure 29-5.
Public and private school boards delegate some of their authority to the association, which is considered a non-profit, non-governmental organization.
The association’s board recently passed its own open meeting’s policy.
The bill would open to the public meetings and records from the association and regular reports to the Legislature’s Government Operations and Audit Committee. The proposal goes next to the House.
