PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after a burglary attempt resulted in the shooting death of his getaway driver.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Adrian De La Cruz entered his plea Wednesday. His sentencing is scheduled for April 18.

Authorities say De La Cruz was shot and wounded outside a northwest Phoenix nightclub last March 30.

An off-duty Phoenix police officer working security at the club reported seeing several suspects trying to steal a small refrigerator from his pickup truck.

It led to a shootout involving the suspects, the officer and a nightclub employee.

De La Cruz needed weeks of hospitalization to recover from his wounds before he was arrested.

Court records show he originally faced a charge of first-degree murder during the commission of a crime.
