FREMONT, Mich. (AP) - Officials say smoke from a mechanical fire prompted a brief evacuation of patients at a small western Michigan hospital.
Gerber Memorial Hospital vice president Janice Stone tells The Associated Press that staff noticed smoke around 4 a.m. Wednesday on the hospital’s third floor and alarms sounded. She says about 19 patients were evacuated to the hospital’s emergency department.
No one was injured.
Several area fire departments responded to the hospital in Fremont, about 40 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. Stone says an elevator motor fire was the source of the smoke. She says the hospital, which is part of Spectrum Health, didn’t sustain fire or smoke damage.
Patients were returned to their rooms around 5:30 a.m. Stone says hospital staff and fire crews followed their training in handling the situation.
