EL DORADO, Ark. (AP) - A man accused in the death and kidnapping of an Arkansas woman whose body was found in North Carolina faces a federal charge that could carry the death penalty if he’s convicted.

U.S. Attorney Conner Eldridge said Wednesday that 38-year-old Kevin Bolton is charged with kidnapping resulting in the death of 20-year-old Cassandra Nicole “Cassie” Carter.

She was found dead in a car trunk in Cherokee, N.C., in March.

Bolton was indicted on Jan. 29. The document was unsealed Wednesday, when Bolton made a court appearance in El Dorado. U.S. Magistrate Barry Bryant ordered Bolton to remain in federal custody until he is tried. A trial date will be set later.

Bryant appointed a public defender to represent Bolton. A conviction carries a penalty of execution or life in prison.
