DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A man convicted of second-degree murder in the beating death of a Des Moines man has been sentenced to prison.
A judge sentenced 18-year-old Kent Anthony Tyler on Wednesday to up to 50 years in prison in connection to the August death of 40-year-old Richard Daughenbaugh. Tyler must serve 70 percent of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole.
The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1nOeGeC ) Tyler told the judge at his sentencing hearing that he should not be held accountable for other people’s actions. Witnesses testified during Tyler’s trial that he was the first to punch Daughenbaugh, but he was not involved in the beating that followed. Tyler argued the punch was in self-defense.
Three other men face first-degree murder charges in the case. Their trials are pending.
