PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Pierre commissioners have named an interim police chief for South Dakota’s capital city.

Capt. Dave Panzer Jr. will head the Police Department while the city searches for a permanent replacement for Bob Grandpre (GRAN’-pree). He’s retiring at the end of the month after nearly four decades in law enforcement and about five years as Pierre’s chief.

Panzer is a 25-year veteran of the Pierre force and says he plans to apply for the chief’s job full time.
