JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Downtown Juneau’s free parking holidays have come to an end.

As of Feb. 1, downtown patrons will be allowed to park free for only two hours. After that, if they wish to continue parking downtown, they must move their vehicles to one of three pay-to-park lots, the Juneau Empire reported (https://bit.ly/1jQPQxj) .

The designated parking lots are at the corner of Main Street and Egan Drive, the corner of North Franklin Street and Second Street, and spaces 5 through 20 in the Marine Parking Garage.

And for those thinking they can just change to a different parking spot on the street instead of the lots, the city has other ideas.

“If you move up two blocks and think you can park for two more hours, you’re going to get a ticket,” City Manager Kim Kiefer said.

A ticket for a parking violation will be $25.

Spots in the lots cost 75 cents per hour, payable at old-fashioned boxes with holes that correspond to parking spaces.

Parking in downtown Juneau had been free after the city canceled its contract with a company for a metered parking system that the city says didn’t live up to potential.
