LELAND, Mich. (AP) - There’s been a serious injury to one man as crowds of sightseers venture onto Lake Michigan’s frozen surface off Leelanau County to visit ice caves formed by waves, winds and winter’s prolonged freeze.
The caves are on an ice sheet north of Leland.
Leelanau Township Fire Chief Hugh Cook tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle that a 21-year-old man fell about 12 feet Wednesday morning.
Thousands of people inspected the caves over the weekend. Lines of parked cars stretched more than 2 miles along narrow rural roads. The sheriff’s department assigned three deputies to direct traffic.
The flood of visitors began more than a week ago after Northwestern Michigan College photography instructor Tom Auth posted photos of the caves online.
