DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - A 19th-century Danville store ledger destined for the trash heap has been rescued.

Danville Historical Society President Sarah Latham tells the Danville Register & Bee (https://bit.ly/1blrOaW ) that an inmate sorting recycling spotted the ledger. He put the ledger aside and told Danville Public Workers employees about it.

Latham says the entries are from 1871 to 1878. The historical society hasn’t been able to determine the store.

She says the ledger would have been gone forever if not for a history-loving inmate.

Latham is asking residents who have old letters, diaries or other documents to contact the historical society.
