ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey jail inmate awaiting trial on murder charges has died.

But it’s not yet known what caused the death of 25-year-old William Parisio, who was pronounced dead at a hospital Monday morning after being taken there from the county jail.

Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park says an autopsy performed Tuesday revealed no obvious signs of significant trauma to Parisio, so additional toxicology and biological tests will be conducted.

Parisio was accused of killing his 22-year-old girlfriend in March 2011. Authorities have said he struck Pamela Schmidt of Warren with a dumbbell in the basement of his mother’s Cranford home before strangling her.

The county police department is handling the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Parisio’s death. The prosecutor’s office is also reviewing the matter.
