GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is recommending a large increase in its maximum daily fine for rule violations.
The increases were proposed following a review of fines and enforcement that was ordered by Gov. John Hickenlooper. That order came after a bill that would have raised the maximum fine to $15,000 a day failed to clear the Legislature last year.
The Colorado Oil & Gas Association that represents the industry is not opposing most parts of the proposal because penalties have remained low for decades.
According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel (https://tinyurl.com/m9lgvct), the current $1,000 maximum daily penalty and $10,000 total maximum penalty are set in law. The new rules would allow fines of $10,000 for each day there is a violation.
