HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The Hattiesburg City Council has passed a resolution that would spell out the city’s official stance when it comes to discrimination and diversity.

WDAM-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1m7BdEc ) the council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution that becomes the city’s first diversity policy statement to specifically include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender protections. It’s similar to one adopted last month in Starkville that was the first in the state to do so.

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, says the city’s vote sends a powerful message to residents that all people are worthy of dignity and respect.

Mayor Johnny DuPree says the city is strongest when all residents feel they can live openly and safely.
