AUBURN, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a man who barged into his estranged wife’s apartment in violation of a protection order has been shot dead by an officer who had been called to the scene earlier.

Auburn Police Capt. David J. DelFavero tells the Syracuse Post-Standard (https://bit.ly/1lWQvf8 ) that officers were called to the apartment shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a report that an estranged husband was violating an order of protection.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann tells the newspaper the man broke in and charged at officers with a meat cleaver. He was fatally shot by one of the officers.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

Budelmann says at least one officer was taken to the hospital but he didn’t know if there were serious injuries.
