MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Students in Marshalltown are going to be getting pedometers as part of their physical education classes thanks to a federal grant.

The Times-Republican reports (https://bit.ly/1gQwd3y ) the Marshalltown Community School District bought 4,200 pedometers to encourage students to be more active.

The district’s grant administrator Matt Tullis said he hopes the students will learn healthy habits by wearing the pedometers.

“It will be something new and interesting to them,” Tullis said. “What we want to do through our physical education program is teach kids tools that they can use for the rest of their lives.”

Younger students in kindergarten through fourth grade will wear the pedometers for four days in a row. Older students will wear them for an entire week to measure activity.

Teachers will record students’ activity, and the district will report back to the federal government, which provided the funding.

The district plans to spend $80,000 on the pedometers. The school board will review bids for pedometers on Monday.

Parents will receive letters explaining the program and have a chance to opt out, but Tullis said he expects most families to participate.
