JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A rally for public education is scheduled for the steps of the state Capitol.

The “Save our Schools” rally is scheduled for Monday.

Speakers are scheduled to include Democratic gubernatorial candidate Byron Mallott and Anchorage Rep. Harriet Drummond.

Drummond aide Kristin Kranendonk says the rally will be “pro-public education,” showing support for increased funding for public schools and opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow public funds to go for private and religious schools.

Critics of the proposed amendment fear it could take money away from public schools. Supporters of the amendment say it would allow for more choice in where parents send their kids to school.
