YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - A group of southeast South Dakota residents will soon get an inside look at their police department’s operations when they attend a law enforcement education program.
The Yankton Police Department will begin its Citizens Academy Tuesday. Eleven residents have enrolled and it will run for 10 weeks.
The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan (https://bit.ly/1hlHZrm ) reports Police Chief Brian Paulsen says the purpose of the program is to foster transparency with the public.
The topics of discussion include K-9 operations, police training and the implementation of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, which brings police officers to schools to talk to students about the dangers of drug use.
Paulsen says he hopes the academy helps diminish misperceptions that some residents have about his department.
