MIAMI (AP) - Researchers in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood are looking for local youth volunteers to help snap photos of their surroundings as part of a study of the historic community.
The project is part of an effort in recent years to revitalize the once thriving, mostly black neighborhood just north of downtown. Saturday’s event at Camillus House will encourage the young photographers to reflect and discuss their photos.
Once considered the Harlem of the South, Overtown drew top musicians like Duke Ellington and poets like Langston Hughes to its vibrant clubs.
In recent years, the Overtown Music Project has worked to bring music acts back to the area, as well as to provide classes for local youth. And earlier this month, civic leaders unveiled the newly refurbished Lyric Theater, built in 1913.
