BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester is recommending the state approve two new charters schools in Fall River and Springfield and allow an existing Fall River charter school to add more seats.
If the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approves the recommendations, more than 1,700 new charter school seats would become available to students in those two cities.
The Argosy Collegiate Charter School in Fall River would focus on college and career readiness for 644 students in grades 6-12 while the Springfield Preparatory Charter School will stress literacy development and character education for 486 students in grades K-8.
Chester is also recommending the board of education approve the state’s second virtual school, based on a proposal submitted by The Education Cooperative in Dedham to serve up to 2,000 students statewide in grades K-12.
