SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine officials say three boys who escaped from a detention center in South Portland after attacking a worker are back in custody.
The juveniles escaped from a high-risk unit of the Long Creek Youth Development Center to a fenced-in area early Friday morning.
Superintendent Jeff Merrill says the boys were taken back into custody before they could get to the outer fence.
Merrill said they caused extensive property damage and managed to get out of the building and into the outside recreation area but he did not say how they escaped.
They are facing charges of escape, assault on an officer and aggravated criminal mischief.
