MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia University College of Law will explore the legal and environmental legacy of a 1972 disaster along Logan County’s Buffalo Creek.
A symposium will be held at the WVU College of Law in Morgantown on Feb. 25 and 26.
Feb. 26 marks the 42nd anniversary of the collapse of an earthen dam along Buffalo Creek after heavy rain. It unleashed a flood that killed 125 people, injured 1,100 and left about 4,000 homeless.
The symposium’s keynote address will be delivered by attorney Gerald M. Stern, who was the lead counsel for the plaintiffs in one of the disaster’s class-action lawsuits against Pittston Coal.
