KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A 25-year-old Ocean View woman who prosecutors say used a hatchet to try to steal a purple Corvette in January is charged with robbery, assault and other counts.
Trinety Crapser pleaded not guilty Tuesday and was being held on $72,000 bail, West Hawaii Today (https://ow.ly/tyDyg ) reported.
Prosecutors say Crapser on Jan. 26 attempted to take a Corvette belonging to a woman who had stopped to place signs along South Point Road in Kau. The Corvette driver, Trudi Grentz, testified previously that Crapser waved a 15-inch hatchet with a 7-inch blade above her head and demanded the car. The two women scuffled and the driver was able to gain control of the hatchet and threw it in the bushes.
Crapser wasn’t able to start the Corvette. Crapser bit her arm and pulled her hair, Grentz testified.
Grentz said that during the struggle, a man from Crapser’s car took a bag from the Corvette that contained Grentz’s wallet, laptop and other items.
Crapser was arrested Jan. 27 and 23-year-old Kainoa Kahele-Bishop was arrested Jan. 30 in the incident and another robbery. He is to be arraigned Feb. 19 on robbery and other charges.
Crapser’s public defender, Peter Bresciani, argued that her bail should be reduced to $25,000. Third Circuit Court Chief Judge Ronald Ibarra maintained the $72,000 bail but ordered an updated bail study. He set her trial for June 3.
