NEW YORK (AP) - The New York metropolitan area is bracing for a winter storm that’s predicted to dump up to a foot of heavy, wet snow by the time it’s all over.

The National Weather Service says a mix of snow and rain should begin falling overnight and continue through the Thursday morning commute before ending early Friday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is urging New Yorkers to refrain from unnecessary travel and to use public transportation on Thursday.

Alternate side parking regulations have been suspended citywide Thursday through Saturday and on Monday.

And yes children, New York City public schools will remain open.
