CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago middle school student is being held in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility on charges of felony aggravated battery and hate crime in connection with an attack on a fellow student.

Authorities say Crystal Lake police responded Monday to a report of a fight between two students at Hannah Beardsley Middle School. It was initially determined the fight was an isolated incident between two students, one of whom was tackled and repeatedly struck. The victim is being treated for fractured clavicles.

The attacker was arrested, charged with battery and later released to his parents. However, further investigation Tuesday by the school and the McHenry County state’s attorney’s office determined the aggressor referred to the victim’s national origin before the attack. No court date has been set.
