TRENTON, Maine (AP) - Maine State Police say a man found in the woods with self-inflicted stab wounds has been charged with aggravated assault after a woman who lives with him ran to a neighbor to report she’d been stabbed.

Police say 48-year-old James Stanton of Trenton was charged Wednesday morning and was under police guard. He was being treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for severe knife wounds.

Police said the 21-year-old woman’s wounds are less severe. She ran to a neighbor’s home about 1 a.m. to report the stabbing. She was taken to the hospital. Her name has not been released.
