MOUNT SOLON, Va. (AP) - The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an unusual theft: $250 worth of bull semen.
Lt. Dennis Back said Tuesday 10 containers of the semen were reported missing from a Mount Solon, which is located about halfway between Staunton and Harrisonburg. They were stolen from a barn.
Jean Schofield is with the North American Breeders Inc., a semen collection center in Berryville. She said if the semen wasn’t stored in liquid nitrogen, it’s probably worthless.
Schofield told the News Leader of Staunton (https://bit.ly/1aSjtv1) bull semen is used to selectively breed specific traits.
High-quality bull semen can fetch as much as $400 to $500.
