BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a fire that seriously damaged a home in a densely packed Vermont neighborhood.

Bellows Falls Fire Chief William Weston said a witness heard an explosion at the home on Tuesday morning, and saw heavy smoke coming from the basement windows.

No one was hurt; the occupants had left the home a short time before the fire.

Weston said the home was heated with a wood pellet stove in the basement.
